Lots of huge movie news this week! Including updates on Star Wars: Episode VII, a big-screen reboot of Battlestar Galactica, and the latest on the upcoming Karate Kid sequel. Let’s get to it!
-So remember all those rumors about Star Wars: Episode VII, and how Chewbacca would be making an appearance? Well it turns out there was a bit more to those rumors than mere speculation and conjecture.
Peter Mayhew will be returning as Chewbacca for the Star Wars sequel, joining the other big original trilogy returnees such as Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill.

This basically means that we can at least depend on one non-CG, costumed creature, unless they decide they suddenly want Chewbacca to become a performance-capture character, which makes almost no sense. Particularly if you’re going to hire Mayhew anyway. The film has already started shooting, so I imagine we’ll find out from set reports or other leaks soon enough. Well, unless this set ends up being locked down tighter than Fort Knox, which wouldn’t surprise me one bit. However, this movie still isn’t due until Dec. 18, 2015, so it’s going to take a LOT of manpower and non-disclosure agreements to keep this all under wraps. (Via: LA Times)

-Another space opera that’s getting another crack at the big screen is Battlestar Galactica. After initially being conceived for the big screen with Bryan Singer attached to direct several years ago, Universal is finally moving forward with a film reboot of the entire Battlestar Galactica franchise, with Jack Paglen (the upcoming Transcendence) hired to write the script. No director has been hired just yet, nor has any cast been announced, but we do know that this movie franchise will not take place within the continuity of either the original 1978 TV series or the successful Syfy reboot.
So yeah, kind of a good news/bad news scenario. Here’s hoping Universal actually has love for the series, and gives it the kind of attention it deserves. A cash-grab movie does no one any favors. (Via: ComingSoon)

-Lastly, we’ve got some news on the upcoming sequel to The Karate Kid. Not the original though. No, instead, we’re getting a sequel to the 2010 remake starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Apparently, Sony Pictures hasn’t been soured on Jaden Smith after the catastrophic box office performance of After Earth last summer, and are deciding to move forward with director Breck Eisner at the helm.
Eisner is perhaps best known for directing Sahara, the blockbuster starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (still giddy to be able to say that). He’s also scheduled to direct the Vin Diesel vehicle The Last Witch Hunter, although he may have to drop out of the project if Sony decides it wants to fast-track The Karate Kid 2. If that ends up being the case, we could possibly see the movie as soon as next summer. So I suppose if you enjoyed the first one, now would be the time to start getting excited. (Via: ComingSoon)
