The medium of film has come a long way, but I’m not sure there’s been any project in recent memory as ambitious as Richard Linklater’s latest, Boyhood. What’s so special about it? Well, as it turns out, this film about the life of one boy from age 5-18 wasn’t just filmed in any old fashion: it was filmed in real time.
Richard Linklater (the man behind School of Rock, Dazed and Confused, and the Before Sunrise/Before Sunset/Before Midnight trilogy) has basically been filming this thing for 12 years, shooting sections of the film in brief segments between 2002 and 2013. Thus, one (and only one) actor will play the lead role from ages 5 to 18, without age makeup or age recasting required. It’s revolutionary not just for the performance by Ellar Coltrane, who plays the lead role of Mason, but also for the unprecedented patience shown by everyone involved, from the crew to the fellow cast, which includes Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke and Emmy winner Patricia Arquette as the boy’s parents. In addition, Linklater’s own daughter, Lorelei, is in the film as well, aging right alongside Coltrane as Mason’s sister Samantha. It’s a landmark bit of movie history, and you can check out your first look below with the official trailer premiere below via MovieWeb:
Boyhood hits theaters on July 11.
