One half of Hollywood’s most prolific writing duo is striking out on his own. Roberto Orci has been chosen to direct Paramount and Skydance’s Star Trek 3. He’ll be taking over the reins from J.J. Abrams, who’s busy with the next three Star Wars films. He’ll remain onboard as a producer for Star Trek 3, however, although his departure is fitting since he probably prefers Star Wars to Star Trek anyway.
To the uninitiated, Orci is best known for his writing/directing partner Alex Kurtzman, with whom he co-wrote the Transformers movies, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and the previous two entries in the Star Trek film reboot. However, Orci and Kurtzman recently announced plans to go their separate ways, giving Hollywood its least dramatic, least heartbreaking “conscious uncoupling” this year. For his part, Orci is currently writing the story for the next Star Trek film alongside writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. No release date is set just yet, but if I had to be the farm, I’d bet it on Star Trek 3 getting released in the summer. Let’s say May. I mean, if I’m wrong, so what? I don’t actually have a farm to lose anyway.
