In a move that could upset some longtime Power Rangers fans, Roberto Orci has signed on to executive produce the upcoming big-screen reboot of the Power Rangers. Lionsgate and Saban Brands also confirmed that Orci will develop the story alongside writers Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, two of the screenwriters behind X-Men: First Class and Thor.
So why would this hiring upset some fans? Well, Orci is a creative force behind some of the most critically maligned films in recent years, such as Transformers and its sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. However, some might argue that a man well-versed in big, noisy action movies with complicated robot fighters might be perfect for this sort of movie. I suppose we’ll know when we get a script.
Power Rangers creator Haim Saban will produce the film along with Brian Casentini, head of development and production for Saban Brands, and Allison Shearmur, the exec who oversaw The Hunger Games as Lionsgate’s president of production.
No word on when to expect the new film, but it’s a project that speaks to my inner 90s kid. So count me in, Orci or no Orci.
