In what could be the best/worst thing ever, Jem and the Holograms, the 1980s Hasbro cartoon/toyline, is getting a movie adaptation.
From Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun Productions, and director Jon M. Chu, Jem and the Holograms is a project that is being fast-tracked to begin production this spring, since I can only imagine there’s some kind of spike in Jem awareness that needs to capitalized upon.
Chu, Blum and Braun made the announcement on YouTube, of all places, where they confirmed this will be a live-action take on the popular cartoon. Sure, it didn’t work out so well for Josie and the Pussycats, but who’s to say the big screen won’t do wonders for the “truly outrageous” (truly, truly outrageous) costumes and music of the original show?

For those who never watched, Jem is the story of of Jerrica Benton and her alter-ego, Jem, the lead singer of a band called The Holograms. Basically, she was Hannah Montana before Miley Cyrus became a thing. Yet this new Jem is being reimagined “for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social-media age,” a statement so riddled with demographic-targeting rhetoric, it’s any wonder this announcement alone hasn’t achieved a kind of sentience.
The script comes from Ryan Lendels, and will center on “an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt — one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.”
So basically August Rush. Probably with a lot less Robin Williams.
Blum is known mostly for horror movies such as Paranormal Activitiy and Insidious. However, Chu has already cut his teeth on music/concert-based films, such as Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and Believe, two films on which he collaborated alongside Braun, Bieber’s manager. So it seems the film is at least being put together by people with some idea of what they’re doing — something that seems exceedingly rare in Hollywood these days.
Still, a Jem movie is happening. Hopefully, this means a new line of tie-in merch. If no excuse exists for me to wear a frazzled green wig, I’ll invent one.
